Michigan State women's basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie signed a new contract Saturday that includes a raise of nearly $100,000 per year.

MSU athletic director Ron Mason said the new deal was not in response to other schools trying to lure the coach away, but rather was part of her yearly postseason evaluation.

McCallie had been rumored as a candidate for the Florida and Louisiana State jobs in recent weeks.

Instead, McCallie will stay and see her base salary increase from $232,875 this past season to $325,000 for next. With other compensations - for example the money she receives for doing her radio show - McCallie's salary will be $500,000 per year.

Incentives, based on things such as success in the NCAA Tournament, can drive that figure up to $643,000. Those also increased with this deal.

"In the case of women's basketball, the landscape is changing by the day, by the month and by the year because the high-profile coaches are being sought out," Mason said. "We have to stay with that landscape.

"We were proactive in all of this. Anything else that is said (of rumored offers from other schools) is incorrect."

Mason said no schools had asked for permission to talk to McCallie since the season ended.

MSU is 149-75 in McCallie's seven seasons. She is 316-148 during her career, which also included eight seasons at Maine.

"The McCallie family is absolutely thrilled to continue working with such a great group of young women. We appreciate (MSU President Lou Anna) Simon's and Ron Mason's leadership during this time," McCallie said in a written statement.

McCallie did not return a call to her cell phone Saturday night requesting further comment.
