MSU update: Freshman reserve guard Kalin Lucas banged his knee in Saturday's win over Northwestern and was not able to practice Sunday. Izzo said he'll play, but MSU isn't sure how effective he'll be. The Spartans need that bone bruise to heal quickly, because Lucas' quickness could be a key against Purdue's in-your-face man defense. He got loose for 16 points in the teams' first meeting, a 78-75 win. MSU had 17 turnovers in that game, blowing an early 16-point lead before recovering. If the Spartans can keep the giveaways below 15, they'll have a solid chance. Matchups will be very important in this game. Purdue goes with a "big small" lineup - four or five perimeter players at once, but all of them are 6-3 or taller, bigger than Neitzel, Walton and Lucas. When the teams go with their starting lineups, Suton will have to guard Hummel, and that's not favorable for MSU. Izzo likely will go small quite a bit with Morgan at power forward, which means he's going to need some help from freshman reserves Chris Allen and Durrell Summers. Summers scored 15 in the first meeting.
Purdue update: The surprise of the Big Ten is coming off the most impressive win in conference play to date, Saturday's convincing triumph at Wisconsin. And the Boilermakers did it without freshman forward Scott Martin (sprained ankle), a key reserve. He's questionable for this game. But Hummel will play, unlike in the first meeting. He and Moore have emerged as beyond-their-years standouts. Walton will grapple with Moore, for the most part. In the first meeting, Kramer had a huge game, beating Neitzel several times and scoring 19 points. Calasan also had a big outing (18 points), and it'll be up to Naymick to quiet him. Grant has been hobbling with banged-up knees. Statistically, the Boilermakers are not overwhelming, but they're finding ways to win. Seven members of the playing group have 10 or more 3s.
Prediction: MSU is getting Purdue at a good time - a bunch of young players coming off the euphoria of winning at Wisconsin, and receiving praise from every angle. But the Spartans aren't playing well enough to beat these Boilermakers in Mackey.
Make it: Purdue 73, MSU 67
