MSU's top five positional units

August 29, 2008

1. Running backs

Ringer's presence alone is enough to push this group to the top. He has some talented depth behind him, and fullbacks Hawken and Jeff McPherson are good players.

2. Receivers

That's right, the group that lost its star to the NFL. But when you consider Mark Dell, Deon Curry, Cunningham, Martin, freshman Fred Smith, Blair White ... it's loaded.

3. Defensive line

Another unit that suffered heavy losses (Jonal Saint-Dic, Ervin Baldwin, Ogemdi Nwagbuo), yet may be better overall. Senior tackle Justin Kershaw leads the way.

4. Linebackers

They'd rank higher if Ryan Allison and Brandon Denson had better camps. But Greg Jones is a star, Eric Gordon isn't far behind, and there's true depth at every spot.

5. Quarterbacks

It's just a two-man group, but Hoyer is one of them. He has an improving backup in Kirk Cousins. And transfer Keith Nichol will be a terror for the scout team.
